The Madrid Court sentenced Diego Costa to six months in prison as the newspaper El Mundo has unveiled. The Atletico Madrid striker pleaded guilty to a tax offense amounting to 1.1 million euros. The player will pay a fine, so he will not have to enter prison.
The Tax Agency denounced Costa for defrauding taxes during the season in which he left Atletico Madrid to sign for Chelsea. Also, the Treasury attributed another tax crime to the player (from 2013), but eventually accepted the allegations put forward by his advisers and withdrew one of the crimes against the public Treasury and halved the defrauded quota.
The footballer reconsidered his initial stance and decided to reach a pact with the Treasury, pay a fine and refund the defrauded fee. As El Mundo publishes, Costa asked Atletico Madrid to deal with his tax problems. The club refused but made a payroll advance, so he had no problem paying.
